How Much Gold Can You Bring to Pakistan from Dubai or Saudi Arabia?

By · Updated · 3 min read

Quick answer
Pakistan's Baggage Rules allow personal jewellery "in reasonable quantity" on your first visit of the year. No gram or tola limit is written in the rules, so the customs officer decides. Gold bars and coins are not personal jewellery, so declare them. Leaving the UAE, declare precious metals above AED 60,000; leaving Saudi Arabia, declare gold or jewellery worth SR 40,000 or more.

What the Pakistani rules actually say

Rule 3B(iv) of the Baggage Rules, 2006 allows "personal jewellery in reasonable quantity". That is the whole rule. It applies on your first visit of the calendar year after more than 7 days abroad (Rules 3B and 18).

There is no gram, tola or value limit in the text. We also checked S.R.O. 682(I)/2006, the FBR table of fixed baggage duties. It has no entry for gold jewellery or gold bars.

About the "10 grams" figure: many websites say 10 grams of gold is duty-free. We could not find this number in any FBR rule, SRO or notice. Treat it as unconfirmed. Ask Pakistan Customs before you rely on it.

Jewellery vs bars and coins

What you carryHow it is treated
Jewellery you wear or usePersonal adornment. Normally fine.
Extra personal jewellery, first visit of the yearAllowed "in reasonable quantity". Officer decides.
New boxed sets for giftsMay be treated as dutiable. Large amounts can be "commercial quantity".
Bars, biscuits, coinsNot personal jewellery. No special allowance found. Declare in the red channel.

What tax applies to extra gold?

The customs duty on gold is 0% in the Pakistan Customs Tariff 2026-27. That covers gold jewellery (PCT 7113.1910) and gold bars under 5 kg (PCT 7108.1290 / 7108.1390).

Other charges, like sales tax or income-tax withholding, can still be added at the airport. We found conflicting figures for these, so we do not quote a rate. The calculator lets you enter the rate Customs tells you.

The formula is simple:

  1. Pure gold = weight in grams × karat ÷ 24
  2. Value = pure gold × (today's 24K rate per tola ÷ 11.6638)
  3. Tax = value of the dutiable part × total tax rate

Example: 2 tola of 22K jewellery is 23.33 g. Pure gold is 21.38 g. At a 24K rate of Rs300,000 per tola, that is about Rs550,000. (The rate here is only an example. Use today's rate.)

Leaving Dubai or Saudi Arabia

The country you fly from has its own rules. These are about declaring, not banning.

Saudi Arabia lowered its limit to SR 40,000. Not declaring there can cost a fine of 25% of the value for a first offence.

Arriving in Pakistan: step by step

  1. Keep purchase receipts showing weight and karat.
  2. Fill the customs declaration (Appendix-C). It asks if you carry gold, jewellery or precious stones.
  3. If you have bars, coins, or more than everyday jewellery, use the red channel.
  4. Pay any tax assessed and keep the receipt. You may need it to take the gold out again.
